Stakeholder Engagement Strategies to Accelerate Sustainable Commodity Development in Sintang Regency

A preliminary study conducted in five LTKL member regencies identified Sintang Regency as a promising area for early intervention in sustainable plantation commodities. This potential is supported by its geographical characteristics, with hilly terrain covering 62.74% of the area, as well as the presence of five key commodities: oil palm, rubber, pepper, coffee, and cocoa. Land use is predominantly dominated by oil palm and rubber plantations. Despite this potential, development has not been fully optimized due to three major challenges: the shift in land use from food crops to plantation commodities, low efficiency in agricultural and plantation production systems, and limited supporting infrastructure and facilities.

In response to these challenges, the Sintang Regency Government has initiated a Sustainable Commodities Program as part of its broader commitment to realizing a sustainable regency vision. The program is currently in the planning and preparatory phase, which includes integration into the Regional Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMD), strengthening partnership networks, and developing a supporting data baseline. This study was conducted to design stakeholder engagement strategies to ensure the program’s implementation is well-directed and effective.

The findings indicate the involvement of various stakeholders with medium to high levels of interest and influence, both directly and indirectly engaged in the program. Based on their respective roles, three main engagement strategies were formulated: collaboration, consultation, and information provision. Overall, the study recommends strengthening cross-stakeholder communication, accelerating policy and planning integration, and establishing a dedicated working group as key prerequisites for the successful implementation of the Sustainable Commodities Program in Sintang Regency.
